Albuquerque Sun News: Lava River Hot Springs Closes for Safety OverflowsAlbuquerque Sun News: Lava River Hot Springs Closes for Safety Overflows Albuquerque, NM – The popular Lava River Hot Springs, located approximately 30 miles northwest of Albuquerque, has been temporarily closed due to safety concerns. According to officials with the U.S. Forest Service, which manages the site, the closure is necessary due to recent overflows of the hot springs that have created slippery and hazardous conditions for visitors. “The safety of our visitors is our top priority,” said District Ranger Maria Garcia. “With the recent heavy rainfall, the water levels have risen significantly, making it unsafe for people to enter the area.” The hot springs are a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, known for their warm, mineral-rich waters. However, Garcia stressed that visitors should not attempt to enter the springs while they are closed. “We know that people may be disappointed, but we ask that they respect the closure and stay away from the area until it is deemed safe to reopen,” she said. The Forest Service is working to mitigate the situation and restore the springs to a safe condition for visitors. Garcia said that the closure could last for several days or even weeks, depending on the severity of the overflows. In the meantime, visitors are encouraged to explore other nearby hot springs, such as Jemez Hot Springs or The Springs Resort & Spa in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. For the latest updates on the closure, visitors can check the Forest Service website or contact the Jemez Ranger District at (575) 829-3745.
