New Rules Introduced in HandballNew Rules Introduced in Handball The International Handball Federation (IHF) has recently introduced several new rules to enhance the sport and improve the playing experience. These rule changes aim to increase the pace and intensity of the game, as well as clarify certain aspects of the sport. Timeouts Extended * The number of timeouts has been increased from two to three per half. * Timeouts now last for 60 seconds instead of 30 seconds. This rule change gives teams more time to formulate strategies and regroup during the game. Attacking Contact with the Goalkeeper * Attackers can now only make contact with the goalkeeper within the goalkeeper’s area. * If an attacker enters the goalkeeper’s area and makes contact with the goalkeeper, a penalty will be awarded. This rule clarifies the limits of contact between attackers and goalkeepers and reduces the likelihood of collisions and injuries. Foot Contact with the Ball * Foot contact with the ball is now allowed inside the penalty area. * However, players cannot use their feet to score goals. This rule change adds a new dimension to the game, allowing teams to use their feet to dribble and pass the ball within the penalty area. Technical Fouls * A new category of technical fouls has been introduced, including: * Time-wasting * Unsportsmanlike conduct * Dissent * Technical fouls result in a free throw for the opposing team. These rules aim to reduce time-wasting and improve the flow of the game. Video Review * Video review is now permitted for certain key decisions, such as exclusions and offside calls. * Video review can be initiated by the referees or requested by teams. This rule change ensures that decisions are made fairly and accurately. Other Rule Changes Other rule changes include: * The size of the goal has been slightly increased. * The number of substitutions allowed per game has been increased from four to six. * The height of the throw-off line has been lowered. These changes are intended to make the game more exciting and challenging for both players and fans. The new rules will come into effect from July 1, 2023. The IHF believes that these changes will enhance the sport of handball and provide a more enjoyable and competitive experience for all involved.
